The final week before a house move is the busiest time. Most people try to do everything in the last two days, which leads to forgotten items, damaged goods, and a very stressful experience. A simple day-by-day plan can change all of that.
Seven Days Before Moving Day
Confirm the booking with your packers and movers company. Check the date, time, and address with them one more time. This avoids last-minute confusion. Also, notify your landlord, housing society, or building manager about the move-out date.
Six Days Before Moving Day
Gather all your packing supplies. You will need cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, markers, and old newspapers. If your movers are packing for you, confirm what materials they bring and what you need to arrange yourself.
Five Days Before Moving Day
Start packing items you use the least. Books, decorative items, spare bedding, and seasonal clothes are good to pack first. Label every box clearly with the room it belongs to and a short description of what is inside.
Four Days Before Moving Day
Pack kitchen items that you do not use every day. This includes extra utensils, baking trays, and small appliances. Keep only the essentials out for the final few days.
Also, take photos of your electronics setup before you unplug everything. This makes it much easier to reconnect your television, set-top box, router, and other devices in the new home.
Three Days Before Moving Day
Pack clothes, except for what you need for the next three days. Use suitcases, bags, or wardrobe boxes for this. Keep one small bag separate with everything you need for moving day itself.
Inform your bank, employer, and any important services about your new address. This is easy to forget during a busy move.
Two Days Before Moving Day
Start dismantling furniture that needs to be broken down, such as beds and bookshelves. Keep all screws, bolts, and small parts in a sealed zip-lock bag and tape it to the furniture piece so nothing gets lost.
Defrost your refrigerator if you are taking it with you. A fridge should be switched off at least 24 hours before the move to avoid water damage and damage to the compressor during transport.
One Day Before Moving Day
Pack your essentials bag. This should include:
- Important documents such as ID cards, lease agreements, and moving receipts
- Phone chargers and power banks
- Medicines and first aid basics
- A change of clothes for moving day
- Cash and payment cards
- Snacks and water bottles
Do a final walk-through of every room, including balconies, lofts, and storage areas. Check that nothing has been left behind in shelves, drawers, or wardrobes.
On Moving Day
Be present at the pickup location from the start. Check each box as it is loaded onto the truck. Make sure all your furniture is wrapped properly before it leaves the house. Once everything is loaded, take a final look at each room before you leave.
