Transfer of Residence (TOR) — Your Duty-Free Allowance Explained
If you are returning to India after living abroad for 2 years or more, you may be able to bring your household goods into India without paying customs duty. This is called Transfer of Residence.
- You must have lived abroad for 2 years or more without visiting India for more than 180 days in those 2 years
- You can import used household goods worth up to 5,00,000 (five lakh rupees) duty-free
- This is a one-time lifetime privilege — you cannot claim it again later
- The goods must be shipped within 1 month of your arrival back in India
- New goods, commercial items, and vehicles are not covered under TOR

- Valid passport with proof of overseas residence (visa stamps)
- Copies of all visa and work permit documents
- Air ticket showing your arrival date in India
- Detailed packing list with declared value for every item
- TOR declaration form signed and notarized
- Separate list of all electronic items with serial numbers

Yes. You need an RTO NOC, Form 20C from the motor vehicle department, valid insurance, and a destination import permit. Customs duties apply at the destination country and vary widely.
Our destination partner works with a licensed customs broker at that location. Most delays happen due to missing or incorrect documents. Having all papers prepared in advance usually prevents this.
