Packing for long-term storage is different from packing for a house move. When items will sit in a storage unit for several months, you need to think about moisture, pests, weight distribution, and the condition of items when you open the boxes again. A little extra care at the packing stage makes a big difference to what you find when you return.
Choose the Right Boxes
Use sturdy, double-walled cardboard boxes rather than single-layer ones. Double-walled boxes are stronger, resist compression better when stacked, and offer more protection against humidity over time. Avoid old, soft, or previously used boxes that have already been damaged or exposed to moisture. A box that holds up for a short move may not survive several months in storage.
Use smaller boxes for heavy items such as books and appliances, and larger boxes for light but bulky items such as bedding and soft toys. This makes each box easier to lift and reduces the risk of a heavy box buckling at the bottom under its own weight.
Wrap Items Properly Before Boxing
Every item that could scratch, break, or absorb moisture should be wrapped before going into a box. Use bubble wrap for fragile items, plain white packing paper for dishware and kitchenware, and clean cloth or old cotton sheets for wooden or leather surfaces. Do not use newspaper to wrap items you care about — the ink can transfer and stain surfaces over several months.
Protect Against Moisture
Moisture is one of the biggest risks for items in long-term storage. To reduce moisture damage:
- Place a silica gel packet inside each sealed box before closing it. Silica gel absorbs moisture and keeps the interior of the box dry.
- Do not store boxes directly on the floor of the storage unit. Use wooden pallets or plastic shelving to keep boxes raised above the ground.
- Make sure every item is completely dry before packing. Do not seal damp or wet items.
- Ask the storage provider whether the unit is humidity-controlled, especially if you plan to store electronics, wooden furniture, or important documents.
Seal Boxes Correctly
Use strong packing tape, not masking tape or general-purpose tape. Run tape along all the edges and seams of each box, not just the centre flap. For items going into long-term storage, tape the base of the box from the outside as well, so the bottom does not give way when the box is picked up later.
Label every box clearly on two or three sides. Write the contents and the room the items came from. This saves a lot of time when you return to collect your things months later and need to find a specific box without opening everything.
How to Stack Boxes Safely
Stack heavy boxes at the bottom and lighter boxes on top. Do not stack boxes so high that the bottom ones are crushed under the weight above. Keep items you are most likely to need near the front of the unit so you do not have to move everything to reach them.
Leave a small aisle in the middle of the storage unit if possible. This gives you space to move around and access individual boxes without having to unstack the entire unit every time you visit.
Items That Need Special Attention in Long-Term Storage
- Clothes and fabric: Wash all clothes before storing. Place them in sealed bags or airtight containers to protect against dust and pests.
- Electronics: Store electronics in their original boxes if available. If not, wrap in anti-static bubble wrap and seal in a sturdy box with a silica gel packet inside.
- Books and documents: Keep books and important papers in sealed boxes with silica gel. Do not stack boxes of books too high — the weight can be significant and can damage the boxes below.
- Wooden furniture: Cover wooden furniture with breathable cloth, not plastic sheeting. Plastic traps moisture against the surface, which leads to mould and warping over time.
